When we chop a fresh onion, a chemical called syn-propanediol-S-oxide is produced. When it reaches the eye, it’s mixed with the eye’s water and form a sulfenic acid which stimulates the eye. To wash away this irritation the eye’s lachrymal glands producing tears.
